We have the potential to become a global hub for the production of clean energy that will keep our existing industries competitive and create new local export opportunities. As with coal and LNG exports, the challenges are complex and require Australia's scientific, engineering and training communities to pull together.

The pace of change is unprecedented, and CQUniversity is committed to playing a leading role in facilitating collaboration across governments, experts and industry and providing world-class research, training and support to the emerging Hydrogen and renewable energy sectors.

CQU has formed a Hydrogen & Renewable Energy Research & Training centre to support the diverse and ambitious range of projects in Gladstone and the region. Analysis shows that the Central Queensland region is a globally advantaged producer of clean energy, specifically Hydrogen. 

This advantage has been recognised by the formation of the NERA Gladstone Hydrogen Cluster and the Federal contribution of $70m towards Gladstone hydrogen hub deployment projects.

  • A large proportion of the Gladstone industrial ecosystem, such as the major aluminium process and smelting facilities, has already committed to energy transition creating a huge domestic demand for Hydrogen. 
  • The deep-water port and other natural advantages make us a global contender for large scale Hydrogen exports. 
  • Manufacturing businesses have commended the construction of facilities to produce crucial equipment and innovative green chemicals. 
  • There are major investments planned around, bio refieneries, large scale green power developments and unique power storage projects.
  • LNG exporters, major chemical and cement producers are all actively exploring requirements to retool and take advantage of the energy transition.

To match the ambitious plans of our industry partners and the scale of the global challenge, CQU has equally ambitious plans for its new centre. 

The centre is based in the attractive waterfront CQU Gladstone Marina Campus and led by Prof Murray Shearer (20yrs+ industry experience in $bn+ large scale energy projects). Several research facilities are under development, and the 1500m2 school of manufacturing has completed construction. An additional suite of Hydrogen Incubator spaces for process engineering, manufacturing and lab research is also becoming available. Procurement is underway for phase one of an integrated green Hydrogen production training and research platform. As a dual-sector university, CQU also trains production, instrumentation, and control technicians for the surrounding heavy industry. An industrial technician is a unique operational advantage; for example, CQU operates and maintains industrial process control systems (SCADA). The new manufacturing school contains a process control room equipped with state-of-the-art equipment from major vendors. Large tracts of land have been allocated to allow future growth and expansion.

About the Roles:

 CQUniversity are targeting multiple engineering and science research professionals, a facility engineer and a cohort of PhD students. 

You will form the nucleus of the new centre and collaborate extensively with other research groups within CQU (list), our key academic partners (formal agreements with Swinburne CDU etc) and Industry partners (list MOUs). Demand for skills and experience in clean energy is growing exponentially, as is our portfolio of potential projects. We seek applications from engineers and scientists who have experience related to clean energy or are seeking opportunities to pivot their careers into this growing new sector. 

Example opportunities include

  • Regionally focused Techno-economic work to identify, optomise and de-risk opportunities within the rapidly evolving ecosystem.
  • Working on the commissioning and research programs associated with our phase one microgrid and hydrogen production and utilisation systems.  
  • Engaging with our array of industry partners to solve practical research problems associated with energy transition at scale.

  • Supervising major honours or postgraduate research projects within the field of the staff member’s area of research.
  • Hold doctoral qualifications or equivalent accreditation and standing together in the field of chemical, mechanical or electrical engineering with subsequent research experience and experience including a further cross discipline that supports renewable energy development.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage in research areas of research strength and a willingness to engage in sourcing and obtaining external grants and industry collaboration contracts.
  • Demonstrated ability to liaise, advise and consult with internal and external clients at all levels and maintaining positive client relationships.
  • You will be expected to hold vaccinations in relation to the COVID-19 immunisation should your CQUniversity role require you to attend any setting / venue / event where there is a specific entry requirement for you hold these vaccinations, as per relevant State Government directives.
