We are assisting Mackay Regional Council in Central QLD to source an exceptional Principal Environmental Officer to lead their Water Treatment Team operations. As the Principal Environmental Officer, you will take a lead role in the environmental management of the Water and Waste operations of the Council including liaising with the regulator on licencing, regulation and compliance issues, delivery of statutory reports, managing environmental monitoring databases, and developing guidelines and practices for improved environmental compliance.

No one day will be the same in this glorious area of natural beauty and will see you undertaking any of the following:

  • Lead and manage all staff within the Water Treatment Environmental Sciences function. 
  • Undertake investigations of contentious and technically complex issues requiring complex policy analysis and legislative interpretation for the preparation of advice, briefs, ministerial and executive correspondence, submissions, publications and other correspondence on environmental management issues. 
  • Assist with site audits for compliance with environmental requirements of construction sites. 
  • Assist in obtaining regulatory approvals for projects including tidal works, vegetation clearing, native title, and others. 
  • Coordination and delivery of exception reports and other reports as required by Water and Waste Services respective Environmental Monitoring Programs. 
  • Investigation and reporting of incidents and breaches related to environment and public health, across council including but not limited to Water and Waste Services, Civil Operations, Parks and Environment and Property Services 

Such an amazing, permanent opportunity will be in high-demand and, with that, we are seeking an exceptional candidate to lead this key Council team. Please review the following key selection criteria to assess if you are “the one”:

  1. Degree in environmental management; science (chemical, forensic, physical, geological, hydrological, environmental, applied and biological); environmental engineering or degree from a related discipline. 
  2. Environmental Auditing experience and/or qualifications.
  3. Substantial experience in environmental management, especially working with regulated water, wastewater, recycled water or solid waste infrastructure . 
  4. Detailed knowledge of relevant state and federal legislation and regulation relating to the delivery of water, wastewater, recycled water and solid waste functions. 
  5. Substantial experience working within government agencies, working within an ISO 14001 environment, preparing statutory reports
  6. Experience developing and managing an operational budget. 
  7. Experience in leading and managing multidisciplinary teams and in the supervision and management of employees and contractors including the ability to coach and motivate employees and proactively take action to manage performance issues. 
  8. Highly developed stakeholder management skills with the ability to conduct negotiations and articulate issues to achieve sound environmental outcomes in complex and contested circumstances.
