Mechanical Projects Engineer

Job Description

We have an opportunity for a Mechanical Projects Engineer to join the team at our Gladstone site, Australia’s largest integrated cement plant. The major assets at the site include a 1.7 million tonne per year capacity clinker kiln, a quick lime kiln, two cement mills and significant material handling equipment including stacking, reclaiming, product packaging, road and rail dispatch and bulk ship-loading.


Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will be accountable for the full project lifecycle of expansion and critical end of life replacement projects, from conception through to execution and handover. This is a dynamic role with ownership over multiple projects at any one point in time. You may jump from pre-feasibility on a capex project to preparing cash flow forecasts for another then actively participating in a shutdown meeting all in one day.


Naturally you will be a team player, brilliant communicator, outcomes focused and able to influence and engage stakeholders with ease. You can make decisions, be across the detail and have the highest level of consideration for safety and risk at each step. Your technical expertise combined with your passion for project management and broad engineering knowledge will help you navigate the “why” and “how” to ensure each project is a commercial and operational success.


About the role:

In this role you will:

  • Ensure your allocated portfolio of projects are executed successfully, including capex and shutdown works
  • Take an active leadership role in safety, health and compliance activities, including JSEA’s, HAZOPs, risk assessments and incident investigations,
  • Making a positive contribution to the SHE culture and performance of the site, with a focus on project contractors
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement, challenging the status quo and generating ideas to improve plant, process and people performance
  • Provide clear communication between all key stakeholders (internal and external) and provide effective presentations, progress reports and updates
  • Ensure effective use of project management techniques, tools, engineering methods and standards are applied for projects
  • Play a key role in the implementation of Cement Australia’s decarbonization roadmap and technologies.


About you:

  • Degree qualified Mechanical Engineer with operational experience in heavy industry materials handling, preferably in cement manufacturing
  • Mechanical trade or Mechanical Engineering tertiary qualifications
  • Diploma in Project Management (or equivalent)
  • 7+ years experience working in a mechanical engineering or project engineering role, within cement manufacturing
  • Extensive shutdown / maintenance experience within execution or project management for fixed plant
  • Proven experience being successfully accountable for projects across the full project life cycle
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Effective report writing and presentation abilities
  • Proficiency with SAP and the MS Office suite
  • Good working knowledge of project management methodology (exposure to PMBOK preferred)
  • Ability and willingness to reside in Gladstone or surrounds (no FIFO)
